I recently installed an oil catch can on my 2011 4.0l. Changed the oil at the same time as the install and used the same products I’ve always been using. About 2 weeks later went to check if any oil had been caught and to my suprise the can was full of what’s in the picture I provided, it smells like a mix of oil and gas. Never had any issues like this before. Along with the oil catch can being full the oil fill cap and tube were coated with a milky yellow substance. I don’t do many short trips so I doubt it’s condensation and the amount is concerning either way. Removed the catch can and changed the oil after discovering this and after 1 week I noticed more on my oil fill cap. Any thoughts on what could cause this. Any suggestions would be helpful… thanks

How big is the catch can ?
When was the PCV valve last changed ?
    Milage?

my 2012 got a new PCV valve and Casey installed at the same time a few thousand miles ago. I noticed I Wolf catch about one measured cup every 4000 miles or so.
Couldn’t tell you if that is a little or a lot relative to other 1GR–FE engines though.

I’d either get into the habit of emptying it when it’s full, get a bigger one, or just put it back to how it was.
I don’t think these engines benefit all too much from having one, With the exception of any kind of forced induction.

edit: I cannot see the PDFs

1.pdf pic is prime case of engine never coming up to temperature (oil temp) from shorter trips in humid / cooler climates. Your catch can did its job but all it was catching was mainly harmless water vapor with a little bit of standard oil vapor mixed in.

Lots of idiling will perpetuate your situation.

Needless to say I see nothing wrong (as long as coolant levels arent dropping).

How do you guys with catch cans properly dispose of the “stuff” you catch?

I put it in the oil container when I do my changes. But most auto stores will take oil.

I dump it in the container holding the drained old engine oil. If doing this outside of a regularly scheduled oil change, you can also just pour it down the oil filler neck.

That looks like a blown head gasket. Get it block tested.

    It’s oil. Dispose with oil.

check PCV function. Check for HG leak.

mine fills about an oil change length of time. Don’t want to forget and have it spill hydrolock the motor.

don’t know how it handles off road angles. It was cheap.

ideally would have a drain back to engine at bottom for oil and one way valve.
Mann ProVent 200 has that option and 40k replaceable filter inside. Heard mixed reviews about the actual unit itself.

My catch can fills up with oil+water mix pretty fast in the winter, I empty ever 2-3 weeks, I drive ~75 mi/day. I can go all summer and maybe empty the can once, and its just oil. My oil cap never looks like that.
OP, check you PCV valve, check that your catch can hoses aren't collapsing and restricting under vacuum. Test your head gasket, especially if the symptoms persist when the weather warms up.
