For context, I'm working on a double cab 1st gen. Rear will have a spring swap and shock relocation, targeting 14" of travel. Front will have a custom high clearance +1.5" kit, probably dual shocks. It's mostly a hunting truck but needs to be able to go anywhere necessary and do it fast. Tires will be 35x10.50R17. Planned lift will be 1.5" front and 2" rear unloaded. The truck is never daily driven and is free to have extended down time as necessary.
I'm aware of FOA's quality issues, which seem to have gone unaddressed for years now. Shocks that leak before they're even pressurized, metal shavings left behind from machining, etc. However, it seems that they're ok after a cleanout and rebuild in the worst case scenario. One way or the other I'm going with rebuildable shocks and all rebuilds will be DIY.
Even if I rebuild the FOAs right off the bat, I can still get reservoir 2.5s all around for less than just coilovers from any other manufacturer. Are there any other long term issues with the FOAs that I'm not accounting for? Are they ok after a rebuild and cleanout?

Don't bother, you'll be time and money ahead buying a name brand even used and DIY the rebuilds.

People shit all over ICON for how frequently they have to be rebuilt, and you are thinking about bro shocks that have to be rebuilt before even installing them?

Ha yeah pretty much. If I can pinch a bunch of pennies in the process, a rebuild and cleanout to start isn't so bad.
If the reason for the problems with FOA is poor cleanup and assembly, that's not such a big deal. If it's an issue with their components being poor (excessive runout, variation in diameter, surface roughness, etc) then I won't mess with them. That's what I'm hoping to find out is whether FOA shocks are ok with a proper rebuild or if they'll always be a problem.

For the rear you could do bilstein 7100's for $265 a piece. Thats what I think I am going with for the rear

7100s are definitely an option for me, I've been looking at them. Especially if they can be ordered with something other than the standard valving.
