    Haltech has eliminated the use of the MAF for me, yeah

    Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
    Even with the Haltech I’d run MAF just because that’s how we deal with them on the 3.5l tunes. MAF curves are soo much easier for me to mess with than MAP. If I go Haltech I’ll run a modern maf though. Even smaller a

    I have read though this entire thread and the one this thread branched off of and I cannot figure out what to do haha. I have a 97 Tacoma with the old bullet style MAF. My current airbox is cracked in 2 different spots and I am going to replace it. 99-04 air boxes are easy to find not so much the 95-98. I know most people that have done this mod had super chargers. I do not have a super charger. I am wondering if my ecu will be fine if I switched to a 99-04 airbox and MAF sensor or if I need to stick to the original style airbox and do the Volvo MAF tube upgrade?

    Does not matter if it’s supercharged or not for the 97, should work

    No, if you keep the 97 ECU and do the Volvo swap.

    A newer ECU will probably need a different wiring harness which would be a pain

    I wasn’t planning on swapping the ecu my airbox is broken and was going to either put in a 99-04 airbox with updated MAF or try and source a hard to find 96-98 airbox and do the Volvo swap. I just don’t know what would be better

    Ohhh ok, the only issue is that the tube section has to be the same because the air flow rate has to be the same.

    you can’t put let’s say a 4” tube section across the MAF section because the air flow rate would be all messed up with more air but the computer thinks is lesser amount of air.

    if the tube section is the same inside diameter across the MAF section you can, if not you can’t

    Yeah I am aware of the diameters and and getting correct AFR’s, I just couldn’t find a solid answer to if the 99-04 airbox with MAF would work correctly on a 97 :/. I know the Volvo will work with the 96-98 airbox you are proof of that!

    If the inside diameter on the 97 where the MAF is the same as the 99-04 airbox I would say yes, if not it’s a gamble but probably not IMO

    Okay so I know this was a while ago but maybe you can help me. I have a 95 tacoma with the 5vzfe. The mass air flow sensor can’t be removed itself. I found a 1997 tacoma at my local junk yard. Would that one work? I looked at a video on your tube how to clean it on a 1990s 4Runner and the mechanic took out the sensor from the air box I believe. I found a 1996 4 runner at my local junk yard as well. Had 400k miles

    95-97 I’m pretty sure are the same MAF if you stay with the stock setup
    I think you can buy a complete aftermarket MAF with housing too

    Read quite some of the thread, but it was just too much. Sorry about that.

    Was there any definite conclusions for a 1996 truck?

    I believe it was made 10/95.
